From the article:

Zanoli says the mother's 911 call over video game obsession "was a little unusual, but by no means is it surprising - especially in today's day and age when these kids play video games and computer games."

Yeah, not surprising in a day when child owners are incapable of parenting. Take the damn game system away, Mom!

The latest one I saw tonight. Picture this: a new mom with her baby just by the Christmas tree. Daddy appears. "So, is she sleep?", he asks. "Yeah. What are you doing up? It's 2 AM". - because we all know that no new dads get up at 2 in the morning to cuddle the baby - "This is our first Christmas as a family, and I couldn't wait". And he pops up the jewelry case with the diamond ring.

So, the message is that I have to have a baby to be given a diamond ring? Thanks, but no thanks.

WHAT?

Why does it always go back to making money? Isn't being a stay at home parent productive itself? Aren't you being productive the moment you start taking care of your spawn and raising it to be a good individual? Aren't you a stay at home parent because you CAN and are ABLE to stay at home? Why do these parents equal being productive to making money? Why does that sentence sound like like "I'd rather be working and making money than staying home taking care of the brats"?

These are the same idiots that tell us how "fullfilling" having children is and how "selfish" and "lazy" we are for not having any. Yet they don't feel "productive". How disgusting.

Hey all. After years of trying, finally got my ob-gyn to put in Essures (instead of getting an old-fashioned tubal) last Thursday (July 23rd). Unfortunately, it didn't go smoothly at first. I was dumb enough to only get some kind of Motrin injection, and everything hurt like hell. However, my ob-gyn allegedly got the tubes placed correctly.

I bled and expelled fluid for the rest of the day and part of the day after, but all of the bleeding seemed to have gotten over itself by Saturday morning.

Then in the middle of the night on Saturday I started getting red bleeding, like a regular period that I used to have before I went on the Pill in college (and which I am still on now). Bright red blood with some chunky bits in it. I called my obgyn's office that Sunday, got the service, and in an hour I got a call back from the lady on weekend call duty. She seemed unconcerned and said that this was within "normal" parameters.

Note that I got a LOT of fluid in me during the procedure; we went through almost 2 bags of saline.

Then I started getting some crampiness, almost like a stabbing pain. Now, I realize that this could be the instrumentation effect. I had a D&C to remove polyps last year and I bled for 3 weeks after that. Heck, I even bleed from a Pap smear. Still, given the possibilities and all of the horror stories on the Intertubes (puns intended) I'm starting to worry.

Well, this has been going on since Sunday and here it is, Friday again. I spoke to my obgyn on Wednesday and she said that we're still within normal parameters.

Bleeding went from "solid red" to "watery red" and then last night I thought I was catching a break; bleeding seemed to have stopped.

But of course I woke up this AM and...more red blood with some bits in it, and back to the cramping/pinching feeling.

I have another call in to my ob-gyn even though I'm seeing her next Thursday. HATING this. I truly hope that I'm not one of the few who can't tolerate them, but what's normal? Was thinking of trying to tough this out through my next period, which is due the week after next.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Thanks so much!

I work at a clothing store and the last couple of weeks I've been offering discount coupons to the adult department shoppers for kids clothes. It's very interesting how many of them do not want the coupons and say something like "Nooooooo! There are no kids in my world, don't give me that coupon." It's refreshing actually.

A few times I get a young couple who says, "No.", and gets embarrassed, blushing visibly, I suppose 'cause they haven't yet discussed children between themselves. But there are really a lot of people who don't want anything to do with children, and children's clothes. At least from my perspective at the adult section of a major clothing store. How refreshing!

How about birth control? What about penis implants, Viagra, etc? I think not covering termination is completely wrong, and it's actually illegal for insurance companies to do so, so the government would be presenting its citizens with unequal coverage. And as we know, it's maternity that creates the largest expenses.

Ok, done with rant. My dream of national healthcare is broken, but I guess overall it may still be a step in the right direction, I just wish it weren't with women a step behind.

Of course Feral Children are the mythical kids raised by wolves but I wondered if there actually was a term for that kid who was never appropriately raised by the absentee parent and flails through life. I hadn't found one clean phrase but did find a site with various phrases for street children from around the world.

http://www.pangaea.org/street_children/world/who3.htm

"Their lives have tended to be romanticized by some, but in most instances they have been referred to in derogatory terms: "gamin" (urchin) and "chinches" (bed bugs) in Colombia, "marginais" (criminals/marginals) in Rio, "pajaro frutero" (fruit birds) in Peru, "polillas" (moths) in Bolivia, "resistoleros" (little rebels) in Honduras, "scugnizzi" (spinning tops) in Naples, "Bui Doi" (dust children) in Vietnam, "saligoman" (nasty kids) in Rwanda, or "poussins" (chicks), "moustiques" (mosquitos) in Cameroon and "balados" (wanderers) in Zaire and Congo."
Does anybody have advice on changing from the pill to the IUD? Any problems? Surprises? I appreciate your responses.

Not surprisingly Melissa Catherine Smith-Means of Alabama (oh...Alabama) was arrested a few months ago for this incident in a Verizon store. Who knew someone would have a camera in a cellphone store?" ... "being arrested she told the police 'My young 'un loves being dragged around on a leash. It's how I was brought up.' "

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
there's a chick whom i sit in the hall with, along with someone else, between our science class and the lab class....we sit there and eat and chat....one day last week this chick said that she was "working on getting pregnant" !!! does she have a bf or significant other? no....she said she wanted to get pregnant so she shouldn't have to go to school and her parents won't let her live at home unless she is going to school or has a job and she doesn't want to work so a baby is her way out of going to school---so she thinks, cuz it might surprise her that pregnant women work, go to school, etc....

she's VERY young....like 18....but can we put this off on age??? i mean kids are a life long responsibility, but no, her mom will raise it! no, her mom doesn't know of her plan....

so okay....TODAY in lab we were discussing a field trip we are taking next week...this chick says she can't go because she is 5 months pregnant!!!!!!!!!! yes, the same chick who just last week said she was working on getting pregnant...

did i miss 5 months? did time really fly???

no, i didn't question her....i'm just going to listen, observe and perhaps dispense some wisdom...later on.....but i mean, WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!?! she doesn't look pregnant either....so here's someone obsessed with having a kid and is now claiming they are 5 months pregnant, when just last week she was "working" on getting pregnant...

maybe next week i'll bring up those psychos who murder a pregnant lady to get the baby to see how she responds....it's something in the news, so it wouldn't be unusual to bring that up....

absolutely, i'll report back! but i mean, WHAT THE FUCK??!?!?!?!?!?"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As if shit wasn't enough....we have some teenage moron trying to get pregnant, and guess who will be paying for it....

I want to remark upon a new trend I see among parents of my generation, the New Age Sensitive Dad. He loves to go on and on about how cool it is that having a child has changed everything into some positive experience. How he's empowering his child by using intentional language that will uplift her spirit and not burdening her with societies boundaries. How his baby only eats organic, glutton-free foods and plays with toys made in Europe to protect them from additives or other "poisons" present in commercially produced baby products. He loves to tell you all of the little things that he does in interacting with his child like he wrote some kind of a book on how to raise the most perfectly aware little human being on the planet.

Fucking gag!

It's a baby for fuck sake. The baby eats, shits, sleeps and cries just like any other 8 month old. Kudos to you for wanting to be involved with your baby's development but shut the fuck up about it already. Your child is not the second coming of enlightened beings, nor is it immune to being annoying when screaming for your attention. I don't give a fig about what that noise means or why ignoring her/him is teaching them independence, just make it shut up so we can have an adult conversation!

You're not any 'cooler' because you discovered all of these negative projections inside yourself that your have magically turned around into positive reinforcements because you have a child to think of now. Everyone can benefit from a little self examination and more positive outlook, we don't need to drop a crotch fruit in order to achieve a better relationship with the world around us. You are not a paragon of modern Feminist thinking because you have a daughter and wish to encourage her to discover her personal potential. Don't sprain your arm patting yourself on the back yet, your kid could turn out to be a degenerate little turd with or without your New Age positive thinking.

Yes I'm very happy for you, New Age Sensitive Dad, that your child has awakened this positive influence in your life. I would have been more happy for you if you could have found that on your own instead of becoming the poster boy for positive parenthood.

He and my brother in law have a joint project requiring they rent a truck and they need a babysitter for about 3 hours as my sister has to work that day. Since the first question he asked is "What are you doing tomorrow?" and I had foolishly answered "Nothing." I was now bushwhacked into babysitting 4 girls ages 2, 4, 7, 9.

On the plus side, the two eldest stopped fighting long enough to unite against me. So when I get home, my boyfriend is home for lunch. I walk through the door, and he asks me how it went.
"The Vatican issued a "clarification" to comments by Monsignor Rino Fisichella that Brazilian Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho should have tried some compassion in the case of the 9-year-old rape victim who had an abortion. In short: Fuck compassion. "

Time Article: http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1911495,00.html?xid=rss-world

A Sequel to the Case of the Pregnant 9-Year Old

The Catholic Church (and Pope Benedict XVI) were presented with a public-relations powder keg in March when news broke that a 9-year-old Brazilian girl underwent an abortion after she'd been raped and impregnated with twins by her stepfather. Catholics from São Paulo to Paris were outraged by the swift public declaration of the local Archbishop, José Cardoso Sobrinho, that the girl's family as well as the doctors who performed the abortion were automatically excommunicated. Monsignor Rino Fisichella, a solidly traditionalist Rome prelate considered to be close to Benedict, tried to soften the church's approach to the case by writing in the Vatican's official newspaper L'Osservatore Romano that the girl "should have been defended, hugged and held tenderly to help her feel that we were all on her side." Two weeks ago, the Vatican announced that Sobrinho, who had been serving past retirement, was stepping down. And that's where the church stood. Until now.

-->>>>In a tucked-away "clarification" published on page 7 of a recent edition of L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican produced a document that unequivocally confirmed automatic excommunication for anyone involved in an abortion — even in such a situation as dire as the Brazilian case. It settles any questions about the absolute nature of church doctrine on the matter of abortion — but it could potentially reignite the p.r. firestorm.

Church conservatives have steadfastly defended Sobrinho, who had rejected Fisichella's criticism of insensitivity and said he was simply stating Catholic doctrine in response to reporters' questions. The L'Osservatore Romano document makes it more than likely that the Pope has felt it necessary to publicly defend the Brazilian prelate's hard line, ordering up the clarification to straighten out any confusion created by Fisichella's article.

The brief document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the orthodoxy office that Benedict personally led before becoming Pope, defends Sobrinho's "pastoral delicacy" and leaves no wiggle room on the standing of the family and doctors who carried out the abortion. "Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life," reads the statement, which widely cites past Vatican documents. "The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society." (While the doctor and the girl's parents were excommunicated, the girl, being under age 18, was not subject to automatic excommunication.)

While the doctrinal stance breaks no new ground, the question now, like in March, is a matter of emphasis. Why, months after the difficult issue had largely faded from view, did the Pope feel compelled to return to a case that could leave the church looking coldhearted? A senior Vatican official says the Pope was forced to back up the Brazilian bishop. "[Sobrinho] was furious," says the official. "There was the impression that the local bishop had been subjected to immediate scrutiny by the Holy See."

But beyond the constant tug-of-war between Rome and local dioceses, there is a more important principle at stake. "We have laws, we have a discipline, we have a doctrine of the faith," the official says. "This is not just theory. And you can't start backpedaling just because the real-life situation carries a certain human weight." Benedict makes it ever more clear that his strict approach to doctrine will remain a central pillar to his papacy, bad publicity be damned.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sexual-justice/exposing-fake-womens-heal_b_217019.html

"Exposing Fake Women's Health Clinics: My Visit to a Local Crisis Pregnancy Center

By Myra Duran, a junior at UCLA and she is on the Executive Board of FMF affiliate Bruin Feminists for Equality.

If you are a student, you probably see so-called crisis pregnancy center ads all the time on campus. They read something like, "SCARED? PREGNANT? NEED HELP? Call 1-800-HELP NOW for a FREE pregnancy test. WE CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR OPTIONS."

But the problem is -- these are false promises.

I am a member of Bruin Feminists for Equality at UCLA. We joined the Feminist Majority Foundation's Campaign to Expose Fake Clinics this Spring. Like the Campaign, we have two goals: to warn women, especially students, about fake clinics in our community and to let the government know deception on the public dime has got to go.

So-called crisis pregnancy crisis pregnancy centers lure women into their facilities with promises of free pregnancy tests and options counseling. But once inside, most provide women with false or misleading information about abortion, birth control, and sexually transmitted diseases. The real zinger is many of these CPCs receive our federal taxdollars to carry out their deception.

[[ video link in article if you follow link :Exposing Fake Women's Health Clinics from Stuart Productions on Vimeo.]]

So, with my boyfriend in tow, I went to find out for myself what kind of information and options a local CPC really offered. By reading its mission statement alone, a woman might mistake the center I visited as being feminist: "empowerment" is the central theme. Their brochure claims to offer "pregnancy options counseling" as well as tests for STDs and other screenings. But as I learned firsthand, their talk about options? Not so much.

The moment I walked in the door, I was hit with spa-like music and an offer of hot tea, which seemed designed to give me a false sense of comfort. The receptionist asked me to fill out paperwork and two things stood out: a question about my religious affiliation and about my partner's name and age. Another red flag was a disclaimer in very fine print about how most of their "staff" are volunteers and not certified health care professionals.

After I completed the paperwork the receptionist transformed into my counselor. She led me to a white, isolated room (without my boyfriend) and asked if the Director of the clinic could sit in our conversation. I agreed.

First, they asked me what I was going to do if I was pregnant. I replied, "I don't know." They said their facility does not recommend or perform pregnancy terminations. Quite suddenly I became keenly aware of a distinct pressure being placed on me by both women. It felt like a two-on-one tag team and I was their prey. The Director kept saying I was at the right place because other clinics do not provide the same "facts" that they do about abortion. She kept calling me "sweetie," as she told me abortion just complicates matters for women. She claimed abortion causes women psychological harm and she forcefully stated that abortion would not be the right choice for me.

So much for options counseling.

After the bombardment of questions, they asked for a sample of my urine -- in a Dixie cup (of all things!). Then, I was led to another room with what looked like an examination table. There a woman dressed in a white coat introduced herself. She did not identify herself as a doctor, nurse practitioner or nurse, but she certainly had the white coat. She asked me questions about my late period and if I was on birth control, but she never gave me any kind of a physical exam. Then, finally, she told me that I was not pregnant.

My response was, "Well, if I'm not pregnant, can I get birth control to avoid situations like this?" She said, "We don't get funding for that." I then asked her for condoms, and she replied again, "We don't get funding for that." There was only one prevention method she mentioned: avoid having sex altogether.

After this consultation, I was led back into the white, isolated room where I began. My initial 'counselor' greeted me with handfuls of abstinence-only education pamphlets. She then asked me if I felt "empowered" after this whole experience.

I replied, "No," and left.

But I am empowered by being a part of great group of active feminist students at UCLA and by participating in this pivotal national campaign to expose fake clinics.

Students need to know CPCs target campus health centers to get referrals. Thankfully our UCLA health center does not refer students to CPCs. But a nearby campus, Santa Monica College, does refer students to a local CPC. In fact, according to our sister feminist club at SMC, their student health center even invited a local CPC to table at their campus health fair this Spring.

No woman should be deceived into visiting one of these places unintentionally. So I am working on my campus to make sure women know where they can go to get comprehensive and un-biased reproductive health care and to warn them about fake clinics in our community.

Policy makers need to understand how CPCs intimidate and misinform women. Over the past eight years, the federal government pumped millions of dollars into CPCs as part of various abstinence-only-until-marriage initiatives. But funding for family planning has remained static or been decreased. President Obama seems interested in returning to evidence-based sexual health and pregnancy prevention programs. His 2010 budget proposes to eliminate most of the giant pots of federal money set aside for CPCs and failed abstinence only education programs.

We must speak out now to end federal funding for these fake clinics.

It is high time to end the dark ages of the Bush era. We can no longer afford to believe the sun revolves around the earth, the threat of global warming is a fiction, and that abstinence-only education and CPCs merit hard-earned tax dollars.

So get involved and help expose fake clinics on your campus or in your community. Empowerment through action is a beautiful thing.

"I don't see our environmental ills as a failure of technical capacity. Many technologies can have a positive effect on the environment; the problem is us, and where we tend to focus our innovative energy.

"As environmental ideas have entered the zeigeist, mostly thanks to global warming—and still mostly focused on that issue—plenty of technology companies are lining up to tell us how they're helping green/save/clean the environment. Advertising agencies and PR firms are delighted to sell us any number of "green" gizmos and they're throwing in some nice self-esteem blowjobs for all of us, using their persuasive talents to assure us that we're enlightened and forward thinking because we just stuffed a green X into our Prius.

"But green blowjobs aren't really my gig. I'm not interested in PV cells, or solar paint, or zero emissions cars, or any of a zillion other objects that companies want to sell us so that we can feel good about ourselves while we roar off the cliff. If I had to think of a couple technologies that I greatly admire, I would say... wool sweaters and long underwear are fabulous. They have a low manufacturing cost and are far more efficient than burning coal for electric heat, or burning heating oil, and they might even obviate the need for a better-insulated house. I remain enamored with bicycles and their gears. These technologies are so wonderfully elegant and do so much while asking so little that I like them quite a lot. And certainly I like the hat and gloves I wear so that I can ride my bike to work in the winter, instead of being tempted to drive my car.

"But the one—the most absolutely key, the rock star green technology—that I champion over all others is birth control: vasectomies, IUDs, the pill, condoms. I don't care which kind you or your family prefers or finds most appropriate, I love them all. Any technology that reduces the absolute number of consumers (and particularly Americans and Europeans who consume the most) now that's a TECHNOLOGY!" — Pump Six And Other Stories author Paolo Bacigalupi," [orig at ecogeek.org ]

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/03/24/vasectomy.increase.economy/index.html

In troubled times, vasectomies snip and prosper
Story Highlights
Urologists report a higher demand for vasectomies in recent months

In New York, vasectomies increase after stocks tumble in fall 2008

During recessions, people have fewer children, according to health statistics

By Madison Park
CNN
(CNN) -- Dr. J. Stephen Jones had seven vasectomies to perform in a day.

The schedule for Jones, a Cleveland, Ohio, urologist, has become more crowded during a recent boom in vasectomies.

"My staff came to me and said, what's happening?" said Jones, the chairman of the Department of Regional Urology of Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. "Why are we suddenly having an explosion in guys asking for vasectomies?"

They looked at their statistics and realized the uptick started around November as the economic crisis deepened. October went down in the history books as one of Wall Street's worst months.

Since then, the Cleveland Clinic has seen a 50 percent increase in vasectomies, an outpatient surgery that is the cheapest form of permanent birth control. Vasectomies are less invasive and cheaper than tubal ligation, which involves blocking, tieing or cutting a woman's fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy.

"It's unlikely that some guy read the Dow Jones numbers that day and said, 'Why don't we have a vasectomy?' " Jones said. "More likely, people have already been considering it and typically a guy and his wife have spoken a year or two about this."

Jones was told by patients that they were getting vasectomies because they were losing their jobs and health insurance, or concerned about being out of work soon.

"They realize they don't have the financial security long-term with what's going on," Jones said. "Several of them have mentioned, 'We can't afford to have any more children in this economy.' My perception is that it's more of the concept of raising children in an uncertain economic future."

Much like Jones, Dr. Marc Goldstein, surgeon-in-chief of male reproductive medicine and surgery at the Cornell Institute for Reproductive Medicine in New York, saw a 48 percent increase in vasectomy consultations compared with the same time last year.

"I have never seen anything like this," said Goldstein, a urologist for the last 30 years. "When things started to go south in the stock market, then the vasectomy consults went north."

Half of Goldstein's New York patients work in the financial sector. New patients filed into his office in November.

"I think the situation of finance and the economy is the major reason," Goldstein said. "Some of them have mentioned that, 'It cost $30,000 a year to put my kids in private school and I can't afford to have another one.' It's never the sole reason, but it's certainly a contributing factor."

During the vasectomy, the doctor cuts the two vas deferens, which are the tubes carrying sperm from the testicles to become semen. After the procedure, men can still have sex, but their semen does not contain sperm and therefore they can no longer father children.

Doctors can attempt to reverse the procedure, but vasectomy reversals are expensive and only work half the time in restoring sperm flow.

Carl Haub, a demographer with the Population Reference Bureau, a private research firm, said the National Center for Health Statistics' data showed that, "During bad economic times, the Depression and the recession in the 1970s, the birth rate did go down." See the chart on fertility rates in the United States from 1917 to 2007 »

"Some folks will postpone having kids," he said. "If you had a vasectomy, you've made a bigger decision that you're never going to have another child."

When people stop having children, it implies a loss of confidence in their future employment prospects.

"Am I going to have a job in six months or a year from now?" Haub said. "If I'm concerned about that, people are not going to increase their financial obligations... It's naïve to say the economy didn't play a significant role in lowering the birth rate."

It's too early to tell whether this recession has crimped the birth rate, Haub said.

At this point, most of the evidence of increased vasectomies has been anecdotal from practicing urologists, because there is no national registry for sterilizations.

The number of appointment requests spiked 30 percent in January 2009 on the Web site vasectomy.com, which links people with local urologists. But throughout the last few months, appointment requests have been fairly level, said Dr. Ted Benderev, founder of the site.

Dr. Lawrence Ross, a professor of urology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and former president of the American Urological Association, said the school's clinics have seen moderate increases in the last six months to a year and that vasectomies are growing popular among lower-income clients.

"My guess is that since economic times have worsened, people are concerned about their ability to raise larger families and are opting for more permanent birth control," Ross said.

People who are concerned about losing their health insurance are trying to take advantage of the coverage for a procedure they've long considered.

"It may have something to do with the economy," said Dr. Bryan Kansas, a urologist. "I can't count on my hands, in the last three months, the number of times someone has said they're about to lose their insurance and ask to squeeze them in."

He and his colleagues have seen a similar uptick in their Austin, Texas, practice called The Urology Team.

Throughout March Madness, Kansas' office has a special on vasectomies called, "Vas-Madness" to capitalize on their patient's obsession with the college basketball tournament.

Patients "would love to have a procedure, go home and sit there when you've got all-day programming, watch basketball," Kansas said.

After the less-than-hourlong procedure, patients usually spend a day or two recovering, moving gingerly and icing the soreness. Some men time their vasectomies around the time of major sports events such as the Masters Golf Tournament and the NCAA basketball tournament to keep themselves entertained during recovery.

Vasectomies are likely to produce tenderness, discomfort and slight swelling and the patient is usually able to return to usual activities within a week.

But in the past year, I've witnessed about four friends of mine morph into something I'm having a hard time dealing with. One of them I'm not allowed to call at all because her feeding schedule is too busy and erratic. Another launches into the "Well, you couldn't *possibly* understand any of this, you sorry, mere childless mortal" business. (For the record, it is correct that I have no experience with having a child, but I understand being overtired, I understand having fucked-up hormones, and from my stint working in the hospital, I actually know a lot about conditions surrounding and resulting from pregnancy. I do not like being treated like a moron.) And then there's the inability to speak in grown-up sentences. I realize that likely comes from spending days on end with just the baby and "spewing cute" is just a natural side effect. Perhaps, because I grew up in a house of adults who just spoke normally, for the most part, I take issue with the drool-y babble-y adult. (I think it doesn't help matters that I remember being a child and hating it when visitors would "talk down" to me with the baby talk business.)

Anyone else have this issue? Anyone have a successful way to cope?
(And, yes, I've been trying to find other friends, but I'm rather saddened that folks I used to find so witty and funny have turned hateful and condescending.)
"Victory Through Daughters: An Excerpt from Quiverfull
Today my first book, Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement, which I've written about at Talk to Action before, was published by Beacon Press. In it, I've investigated the growing ranks of the explicitly pronatalist, and self-named, "patriarchy" movement, which advocates strict interpretations of wifely submission to male headship, women forgoing all forms of contraception to bear as many children as God gives them, and homeschooling their daughters to do the same. So far, the book is being received as a fair and accurate depiction of a growing movement within conservative evangelicaldom (including kind words from Christianity Today) that deserves more attention than it has received to date. An excerpt of the book has been published at religion journalism site Killing the Buddha.."

http://www.thenation.com/blogs/anotherthing/415640

"March 10th is National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers, and man oh man could they use some love. Obama's victory may protect Roe v Wade in the Supreme Court, but state legislatures are doing their best to pile on the obstacles and restrictions: mandatory ultrasounds are the latest fad, with bills being considered in eleven states ( because apparently women are so stupid they might not realize they're having an abortion because they're pregnant). And then, as Michael Winerip reported in an unusually thorough piece in Sunday's New York Times (in the Style section, sigh, along with the rest of the girlynews), the women's health activists who form the backbone of many clinic staffs are retiring and proving hard to replace in the more conservative and rural regions, like upstate New York, the South and Midwest. Doctors, nurses and technicians are reluctant to work in clinics in anti-choice places where they will be picketed, socially ostracized and forced to protect themselves daily against possible violence. Low pay is another factor: anti-choicers love to talk about abortion as a business, but adjusted for inflation, the price of a first trimester abortion is about what it was thirty years ago, although security-related costs have skyrocketed -- one reason why clinic staffers make about half what they would in another specialty.

Will the next generation step up to the plate? Sally Burgess, head of the National Abortion Federation, thinks that growing up with legal abortion, too many lack "the fire in the belly." Then too, med school policies mean only a small proportion of medical students are even learning how to perform this relatively simple procedure.

You can show your support for the selfless people who make more than words on a page by making a donation to the Women's Reproductive Rights Assistance Project (WRRAP) , an all-volunteer group which helps low-income girls and women around the country pay for their abortion care. As the economy sinks and unemployment rises, more and more women will find themselves both needing to terminate a pregnancy and unable to come up with the cost. Help WRAPP be there for clinics and for women.

Donations of any size are more than welcome (and yes, the rather odd name on the Paypal account is correct -- I checked), but if you send me your receipt for $50 or more, I will mail you a signed copy of Learning to Drive: and Other Life Stories, my collection of personal essays.
THE BIRD FOR THE KIDS _ A Louisiana woman is accused of trading two young children in her care for a pet cockatoo and $175 cash from a couple who had been trying for years to have their own child. Authorities say Donna Greenwell, a long-haul trucker, spotted a flier selling a cockatoo for $1,500 and called the couple, who'd been trying to have children. When they told that to Greenwell, she allegedly offered to hand over the 5-year-old-boy and 4-year-old-girl for about $2000. When the couple said they couldn't meet the price, Greenwell agreed to make an even trade: the bird for the kids. Everything began to unravel when authorities received a phone tip that the couple and the children would be at a fast food restaurant. The children are now in state custody.

Nadya Suleman denies being selfish, says she holds each baby 45 minutes

By Mike Celizic

MSNBC.COM
TODAYShow.com contributor

The Southern California woman who gave birth to octuplets last week told TODAY’s Ann Curry in an exclusive interview that growing up as an only child, she had always dreamed of having “a huge family.”

She also denied charges that she was irresponsible to have so many babies — especially with six other children already at home.

“People feel, you know, this woman is being completely irresponsible and selfish to bring these children in the world without a clear source of income and enough help to raise them,” Curry told Nadya Suleman in a segment that aired Friday on TODAY.

“The world outside is saying, ‘What are you doing?’ ”“I know I'll be able to afford them when I'm done with my schooling,” the 33-year-old single mom replied. Calm, poised and articulate in the glare of the media spotlight, Suleman added: “If I was just sitting down watching TV and not being as determined as I am to succeed and provide a better future for my children, I believe that would be considered, to a certain degree, selfish.”‘I love my children’

Suleman, who said she holds each premature infant 45 minutes each day, said she was hoping to have one more child after having six previous children, all of whom are under the age of 7. She said she had six embryos implanted, two of which resulted in twins.

Curry reported that although Suleman has received disability payments from the State of California, she said she refuses to accept welfare payments. Suleman and her children live with her mother, Angela Suleman.“All I wanted was children. I wanted to be a mom. That's all I ever wanted in my life. I love my children,” she told Curry.

Curry said that Suleman said she intends to return to college in the fall to complete a master’s degree in counseling. Suleman had worked in a state mental hospital from 1997-2006, but spent much of the time after 1999 on disability after being injuring her back in a riot at the facility.Suleman said she is a good mother.

“I'm providing myself to my children. I'm loving them unconditionally, accepting them unconditionally,” she told Curry. “Everything I do. I'll stop my life for them and be present with them. And hold them. And be with them. And how many parents do that? I'm sure there are many that do, but many don't. And that's unfortunate. That is selfish.”‘Phenomenal risk’

Suleman said she was fully aware of the risks of carrying eight fetuses. “Those are my children, and that’s what was available,” she said. “It’s a gamble.”In a separate segment, NBC’s chief medical editor, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, said the gamble didn’t end with the live births of all eight babies.“That risk is not only to mom – her uterus can rupture and she can die — there’s a phenomenal risk to eight babies. Eight babies, by definition, cannot be born normal weight and robust,” Snyderman told TODAY’s Matt Lauer after watching Suleman’s interview with Curry.

She explained: “They’re going to watch these kids very carefully for eating problems, growing [problems], and then seizures, jaundice, heart problems, lung problems, blindness, developmental delays — there’s a laundry list of things. Long-term, because some of these children will be physically or mentally challenged, there’s a looming price tag out here. The hospital bill alone will run $1.5-3 million dollars. Forget about getting to college; just to get through special needs stuff — it’s going to have to come from somewhere, either the taxpayers of California or her family or her church or the hospital.

But she can’t do it alone.”NBC contributor and psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz added that there will be emotional issues to deal with as well. “Undoubtedly these eight children are going to have issues: at the minimum, the issue of neglect,” Saltz told Lauer.

“Obviously, she’s saying she’s going to love them, but there are 14 children and there are one of her,” Saltz continued. “There’s going to be an absence of some emotional needs. There will probably be developmental delays at best in these children; maybe learning disabilities. There are going to be major issues that they’re going to need various therapies for.”Childhood dream

Suleman said she went to the same in vitro fertilization clinic to have all 14 of her children. All were conceived with donated sperm from the same father, Suleman said. Suleman told Curry that the father is a bit overwhelmed right now but she is hoping that he will want to get to know his children when he is ready.

“How did an only child end up with 14 children?” Curry asked Nadya Suleman.“That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family, and I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that I really lacked, I believe, growing up,” she replied. The entire exclusive interview will air along with exclusive video of the babies on TODAY Monday, Feb. 9, and on Dateline at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

“Describe what you felt you lacked within,” Curry said.“Feeling of self and identity,” Suleman, 33, replied. “I didn't feel as though, when I was a child, I had much control of my environment. I felt powerless. And that gave me a sense of predictability. Reflecting back on my childhood, I know it wasn't functional. It was pretty dysfunctional, and whose isn't?”Saltz later opined to Lauer that Suleman’s statement reveals emotional issues. “I think she’s in a bit of denial here and quite defensive, because in fact she does talk about the fact that this has been her life’s mission: to have babies, have babies, have babies."

In the first part of the second paragraph, am I the only one here who has no idea what the fuck she's talking about? A sense of predictability? What the hell does that mean? She's got a bad case of psychobabble going on here. I would really like to ignore this whole thing, but I can't do it. It's like a train wreck. You don't want to look, but you have to.

At least most of the corporate sponsors that would usually rush in to giver her everything in the world are taking a step back, what with all the unanswered questions, and the obvious mental illness of this woman and her doctor.

Pro-Life Group up in Arms over Krispy Kreme's Abortion Doughnuts
http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2009/01/pro-life_group_up_in_arms_over.php#
By Kyle Munzenrieder in PoliticksThursday, Jan. 15 2009 @ 1:16PM

Krispy Kreme, being the genial purveyor of glazed goodness that it is, decided to get in on the Obama inauguration craze and is offering one free doughnut to every costumer on January 20, Inauguration day, and released this seemingly innocuous press release:
"Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American's sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies -- just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet 'free' can be."
Well, The American Life League noticed the liberal use of the word choice and decided to blast the chain bakery for producing abortion doughnuts.

"The unfortunate reality of a post-Roe v. Wade America is that 'choice' is synonymous with abortion access, and celebration of 'freedom of choice' is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand," the group's president, Judie Brown said in a statement.

File this under "Overreactionary Wing Nuts" and another attempt of conservatives to redefine words for their political means (You can try to rewrite the Constitution, but not the dictionary). Of course, the "overreactionary libtard" counter to this is that conservatives want to demonize all choice from America until we're living under a fundamentalist dictatorship. A fundamentalist dictatorship without doughnuts.

The full, completely unbelievable press release follows after the jump.

KRISPY KREME CELEBRATES OBAMA WITH PRO-ABORTION DOUGHNUTS Washington, DC (15 January 2009) -

The following is a statement from American Life League president Judie Brown:

"The next time you stare down a conveyor belt of slow-moving, hot, sugary glazed donuts at your local Krispy Kreme, you just might be supporting President-elect Barack Obama's radical support for abortion on demand - including his sweeping promise to sign the Freedom of Choice Act as soon as he steps in the Oval Office, Jan. 20.

"The doughnut giant released the following statement yesterday:

'Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American's sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies -- just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet "free" can be.'

"Just an unfortunate choice of words? For the sake of our Wednesday morning doughnut runs, we hope so. The unfortunate reality of a post Roe v. Wade America is that 'choice' is synonymous with abortion access, and celebration of 'freedom of choice' is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand.

"President-elect Barack Obama promises to be the most virulently pro-abortion president in history. Millions more children will be endangered by his radical abortion agenda.

"Celebrating his inauguration with 'Freedom of Choice' doughnuts - only two days before the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision to decriminalize abortion - is not only extremely tacky, it's disrespectful and insensitive and makes a mockery of a national tragedy.

"A misconstrued concept of 'choice' has killed over 50 million preborn children since Jan. 22, 1973. Does Krispy Kreme really want their free doughnuts to celebrate this 'freedom.'

"As of Thursday morning, communications director Brian Little could not be reached for comment. We challenge Krispy Kreme doughnuts to reaffirm their commitment to true freedom - to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - and to separate themselves and their doughnuts from our great American shame.

"American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Julie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to natural death."

do you think its a bit odd that i am a RN and my main specialties are labor/delivery, and neonatal intensive care and i am so PRO CHILD FREE..????
i love working with my mamas, and babys, and helping/working with really sick kids...
how ironic what i do for work--as i am totally on the kid free lifestyle..
wow i am so excited i DONT have to do any of it!!!..the sacrifices, money, loss of freedom...
just thinking about it makes me feel so HAPPY and FREE!!!! yay.
however, this trips me out that i deliver babies for a living..mostly its a fun gig for me..
<<dont laugh>>>
why do people always have to ask?
ask if your married, ask you if you have kids, ask you when your having kids..
and then say oh you can still adopt when you change your mind..
